The complex exercise “Tropical Coral Reefs” invites students to use their knowledge on ecology to investigate tropical coral reefs. It expects them to analyze abiotic and biotic environmental factors, investigate current threats to coral reef ecosystems (coral bleaching, Crown-of-Thorns Starfish), and discuss the “endangered” status of the Great Barrier Reef.

- I can describe the influence of biotic environmental factors on organisms, and, using specific examples, I can illustrate their adaptations and adjustments. I can elucidate the ecological significance of these adaptations and adjustments.

- I can name the trophic levels present in an ecosystem, and I can explain their interactions and interdependencies.

- I can state the Lotka-Volterra equations.

- Using the Lotka-Volterra equations, I can deduce and describe the development of the populations in a predator-prey relationship, and I can present this development in a graph.

- I can describe and explain the regulation of population density through the interaction of multiple inter- and intraspecific influences.

- I can describe, compare, and discuss the vulnerability of different ecosystems to outside influences.

- I can describe what is meant with the term biodiversity.
